Summary Profile
Prof Dr. Cheong Soon Keng has over 30 years of medical experience in clinical medicine and pathology. Prof Cheong’s impressive medical experience includes the role of the Professor of Haematology in the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Head of the Department of Laboratory Diagnostic Services and Head of Clinical Haematology & Stem Cell Transplant Services of Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

 

He initiated the collaboration between Hospital UKM and the National Cancer Council (MAKNA), establishing the MAKNA-HUKM Cancer Institute to provide cancer services to cancer patients in April 1999 and performed the first stem cell transplant in Hospital UKM in September 1999.

 

As an active researcher in basic sciences and clinical haematology, Prof Cheong has authored or co-authored over 140 publications in both national and international peer-reviewed journals. He has won numerous research grants and presentation awards. His current research interest is in the molecular genetics & novel treatment strategy of blood disorders particularly blood cancers, the development and application of dendritic cell-based vaccine for cancers, and the biology and application of mesenchymal stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cells in regenerative medicine. He currently supervises a number of candidates for MSc and PhD in medical sciences.

 

Currently Prof Cheong serves as the President of the College of the Pathologists, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, the Vice-President of the National Cancer Council (MAKNA), the Country Representative to the World Association of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and the Councilor for Malaysia in the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He is an Emeritus Member of the American Society of Hematology. Prof Cheong is also currently holding the role Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia.

 

He is the Associate Editor for "Hematology" and "Malaysian Journal of Pathology". He chairs the Specialty Subcommittees for Pathology and Haematology for credentialing of pathologists and haematologists respectively in the National Specialist Register of Malaysia, maintained by the Malaysian Medical Council and the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.
